A former presidential candidate Dr. Gbenga Olawepo Hashim has called for decentralization of the security architecture in the country to solve the security challenges facing Nigeria.
He made the call while bearing his views on issues of National interest.
The business Mogul said there was a decentralized policing system in Nigeria in the first Republic where there were National, Regional and local government police which was effective.
‘‘In the first Republic local governments had their own police system and the regions which are now like state have their own police system and federal have its own police, there is nothing stopping Nigeria from having their own police’’.
On the issue of Local Government Autonomy, Dr Hashim said Local Government Administrators should look inward on how to generate enough revenue instead of depending on the federal allocation which is the basis for the call for Local Government Autonomy in some quarters.
“Anyone who wants decentralization of responsibility will also be talking about financial autonomy which is not just having the power to go and collect money directly from Abuja; it also means that you have some legislative power to raise funds at local Government Level”
On the next general election Dr. Hashim, who is one of the founding members of the People’s Democratic Party advised Nigerians to vote out leaders and parties that perform below expectations.
“All the people who not performing, who are messing up the security, messing the economy vote them out”
Dr. Hashim who did not contest for political office in the last election said he will contest in the next general election.
“ Nigerians should expect me on the election circuit, I did not run in 2023, in 2027 I am going to run, just wait for the party to be announced and for the position to be announced, but certainly I am going to contest in 2027 by the Grace of God.
