The Nigerian Red Cross society, in Kwara State, has appealed to organisations and individuals in Kwara State to collaborate with it, in a bid to render adequate emergency services in the state.
It also reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to the seven fundamental principles of the Red Cross Red crescent Movement particularly humanity, impartiality, neutrality, independence and voluntary service to the society.
The state Chairman, Chief Rafiu Oyeyemi Balogun, stated this in a press conference at the weekend, at the Red Cross office in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital, to commemorate the 2023 World Humanitarian Day, a day set aside to recognize humanitarian personnel and aid workers who risk their lives working for charitable causes.
Speaking on this year’s theme, #NoMatter What, Balogun stated that the theme sums up the organization’s firm resolve to serve humanity, even in the face of difficulty.
He lauded the 800,000 volunteers and staff who are committed to alleviating suffering, supporting communities, and saving lives, often at great personal risk.
“From providing First Aid services, pre-hospital care, other life-saving medical assistance in conflict zones to responding to natural disasters with rapid relief and rehabilitation efforts, the Nigerian Red Cross Society exemplifies the spirit of humanity at its finest.

“The organization’s 800,000 volunteers and staff have consistently demonstrated their commitment to alleviating suffering, supporting communities, and saving lives, often at great personal risk.
“This year, the Nigerian Red Cross Society draws attention to the theme #NoMatter What, which encapsulates the organization’s steadfast resolve to serve humanity relentlessly, even in the face of adversity. The theme of World Humanitarian Day 2023 is #NoMatter What.
“In a world beset by challenges, #NoMatter What speaks volumes about the extent to which humanitarian workers go, in an often dangerous and violent world to ensure that they alleviate human suffering,” he said.
While lamenting the shortage of fund and basic amenities required to carry out the humanitarian service, he rued the hardships faced by the caregivers in the line of duty.
“Between 2016 and 2022, according to the Aid Worker Security Database, 41 workers have been killed in north-east Nigeria. While 22 have been wounded and 28 kidnapped, only 3 months ago, 5 aid workers were kidnapped in Apa, Benue State.
“With over 800,000 volunteers and counting, the Nigerian Red Cross Society continues to work on the frontlines, providing critical aid, solace, and hope to the most vulnerable, regardless of the obstacles.”
Balogun appealed that the support of donors and supporters worldwide will go a long way. He also charged parents and guardians to encourage their wards to join the Red Cross society.

“As we celebrate the resilience of humanitarian workers who tirelessly give of themselves, the Nigerian Red Cross Society also extends an earnest appeal to donors and supporters worldwide.
“The vital humanitarian work carried out by the Nigerian Red Cross Society is only possible with the support of compassionate individuals and organizations who believe in the power of humanity and of collective action.
“By contributing to the Nigerian Red Cross Society, donors can directly impact the lives of those affected by emergencies, disasters, and conflicts throughout the country and the world at large.
“Prince Adeaga Oluyemisi Adetayo, the National President of the Nigerian Red Cross Society, states that “World Humanitarian Day reminds us that compassion knows boundaries, and commitment is that no our #NoMatterWhat, we are dedicated to serving humanity.
“However, we cannot do it alone. We urge all those who believe in the potential of humanity to join hands with us and support our efforts. Together, we can be the beacon of hope that lights up the darkest corners.”
