The All Progressives Congress (APC) House of Representatives primary election in Ilorin West/Asa Federal Constituency is taking place today, with political momentum strongly building around Dr. Mopelola Bashir Abdulmalik as a leading contender against incumbent lawmaker, Hon. Muktar Tolani Shagaya.
The atmosphere across the constituency has remained charged as party members prepare to decide who secures the APC ticket for the 2027 general elections in what is widely seen as one of the most closely watched primaries in Kwara State.
Dr. Bashir enters the contest with significant political backing following a series of endorsements from stakeholders and party groups. Prominent among them is the adoption of her candidature by stakeholders in Asa Local Government Area, who described her as a consensus choice capable of uniting the constituency and strengthening the party’s electoral chances.
She also enjoys the support of a coalition of APC youth stakeholders across Ilorin West and Asa, who have consistently highlighted her loyalty to the party, administrative experience, and grassroots appeal.
Her supporters argue that her emergence would reinforce inclusion in governance, particularly for women, while sustaining the legacy of the Otoge political movement in Kwara State.
However, the incumbent Hon. Muktar Tolani Shagaya remains a strong contender, relying on his incumbency advantage, legislative record, and established political structures across the constituency.
Party observers note that both camps have intensified last minute engagements with delegates, underscoring the competitive nature of the primary and the high stakes involved.
As voting commences, attention remains fixed on Ilorin West/Asa, where today’s outcome is expected to significantly shape the political direction of the constituency ahead of the 2027 general elections.
